Mental Health and Counseling

 

If you or someone you are concerned about are in a crisis state and at risk of harm to yourself, others, or property,

or at risk of psychiatric hospitalization, you may exercise either of the following three options:

  • Call 911 

    (Police and fire department personnel are trained responders to situations involving mental health issues.)

  • Go to the Emergency room at a local area hospital.

  • Contact the nearest provider of crisis psychiatric services.

Mental Health Services

Mental health for those in need, which can address unique problems with different solutions, from counseling, to therapeutic case management, to 24-hour supervised residential living, to rehabilitation. We are also one of only six organizations selected by the State of Illinois to provide preventive children’s mental health services and are a certified Mental Health First Aid training provider. We offer Integrated Health Services targeting a variety of physical health and mental health needs. Our Mental Health services include:

  • 24-hour Supervised Residential (placement by referral only)

  • Community Support & Case Management

  • Psycho-Social Rehabilitation

  • ACT – Assertive Community Treatment

  • CST – Community Support Team

Substance Abuse Counseling

Substance use prevention and treatment, whether that requires community intervention, outpatient treatment, or DUI evaluation, risk education, and counseling. Our Substance Use Counseling services include:

  • Level I & II Outpatient Treatment

  • DUI Risk Education

  • DUI Evaluations

  • DUI RE-Evaluations

  • Early Intervention

  • Toxicology Screening

This clinic, formally known as Integrated Health Care - West, will work together with you so it is as easy as possible for you to receive health and social services in your neighborhood, close to home.  We provide holistic, integrated, compassionate physical and mental health services.  We are your healthcare partners, helping you to manage and understand your health problems, and guiding you through the healthcare system. As an IHC site, what sets us apart from other Mile Square Health Center (MSHC) clinics is that we are fully staffed by outstanding Nurse Practitioners. Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses with advanced degrees, certification, and clinical training to provide health care services to individuals of all ages. Nurse Practitioners promote a comprehensive approach to health care and emphasize the overall health and wellness of their patients.

The Chicago Center for Family Health- one of the foremost family therapy training institutes in the world, renowned for its unique family resilience approach, and dedicated to strengthening families in crisis. We offer advanced training for mental health and health professionals; counseling services; and community programs.

 

Chicago Christian Counseling Center- provides Christ-centered professional counseling at our locations in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana for people in emotional pain.

 

Counseling Services provided by Catholic Charities- Catholic Charities fulfills the Church's role in the mission of charity to anyone in need by providing compassionate, competent and professional services that strengthen and support individuals, families and communities based on the value and dignity of human life.

 

Community Counseling Centers of Chicago- helps people overcome mental health problems, substance use disorders and the trauma of sexual assault and abuse. We provide services at five locations in Chicago. We also offer parenting classes, education about mental health and advocacy for people with mental health problems.

 

Metropolitan Family Services-Builds on individual strengths and capacity for change, while addressing special needs, behavioral and situational problems or mental illness. Counseling services are offered for children, families, adults and seniors. Psychiatric services are available at certain centers.
 

Housing Programs/Services

  • Permanent Supportive Housing-Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a program that helps eligible people find a permanent home and also get local mental health services but only if and when they need that help.

  • PSH Bridge Subsidy Program - In order to be eligible to apply for the DMH Bridge Subsidy Program you must have an Axis I diagnosis of serious mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse diagnoses.

WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS?

  • Hotline staff are in continuous contact with domestic violence shelters and they can quickly identify any open shelter spaces near you

  • If shelter space is not available the Hotline can help identify alternatives

  • Callers may be eligible for an Order of Protection that grants victims exclusive possession of their home or residence

  • The Hotline can assist callers with information about counseling, legal assistance, medical assistance and children’s services

  • If a caller wants a referral to services, a three-way link with the agency that best meets your service and geographic needs can be made

  • Callers can get information about laws that can help victims of domestic violence and the children of victims of domestic violence

  • Callers can get info about the Victim’s Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA) to protect your job and protect you in the workplace

  • Callers can get info about the Safe Homes Act that allows renters who are victims to terminate their lease early or get their locks changed

  • Callers can get information about adding protections for family pets to an Order of Protection

  • Callers can get information about safety planning and strategies to increase safety such as providing a copy of an Order of Protection to an employer or to a child’s school; or varying routines including the time victims leave for work or the routes traveled.

Suicide Prevention and Intervention 


The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline- is a 24-hour, toll-free, confidential suicide prevention hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. By dialing 1-800-273-TALK (8255), the call is routed to the nearest crisis center in our national network of more than 150 crisis centers. The Lifeline’s national network of local crisis centers provide crisis counseling and mental health referrals day and night.

 

Grief Counseling


Greif Net- This is an internet community designed to support adults, children, and adolescents experiencing grief and loss. There are email lists and online discussion groups for people of all ages connected to this website.

 

Abuse and Trauma - Children and Adolescents


childhelp.org-This website is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. Their mission statement is to meet the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of abused, neglected, and at-risk children. Childhelp says they focus their efforts on advocacy, prevention, and treatment and community outreach.

 

Darkness to Light- This is an organization devoted to preventing, recognizing, and reacting responsibly to child sexual abuse.

 

National Institute of Trauma and Loss in Children- This organization aims to provide direct services to traumatized children and families as well as training and education to school professionals, crisis intervention teams, medical and mental health professionals, child care professionals and clinicians.

 

 Chicago Child Advocate Center- The Chicago CAC provides legal, therapeutic, and medical resources for children and adolescents who are making allegations of sexual abuse in Chicago.

 

Sex Offender Registration Information- This website gives information about where convicted sexual offenders live so that you can promote safety in your local community.

Trauma Pages- This is an ocean of resources with a great variety of information about trauma and about the many types of trauma. It also has information about child and adolescent trauma issues. Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault- This organization is devoted to combating sexual assault in Illinois. It has links to local sexual assault resources.

 

 Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network- This website gives information about how to prevent abuse and treat victims.

 

 The Wounded Healer Journal-This is a website with support and resources for adults who have experienced trauma and abuse.
